Dumb and Dumber (1994) SKY CINEMA GREATS, 8.00PM ★★★★

The film that set the tone for movie comedy in the Nineties and beyond: an incredibly silly yet very funny effort from the Farrelly brothers, which confirmed Jim Carrey’s star status (following his turns in The Mask and Ace Ventura). He and Jeff Daniels play two hapless fools who try to deliver a lost briefcase to a pretty lady (Lauren Holly) in Aspen and get mixed up in a kidnapping. Brady Bluhm and Karen Duffy also star.

Room (2015) FILM4, 9.00PM ★★★★

Emma Donoghue’s 2010 novel – about a mother and her five-year-old son who are kept imprisoned – was a worldwide hit and shortlisted for the Booker Prize. The impeccable Brie Larson and Canadian Jacob Tremblay are ideally chosen for their ying-yang energy, and director Lenny Abrahamson makes the daily rituals of this malnourished pair come credibly alive. Joan Allen and William H Macy are among the supporting cast.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994) ITV4, 9.15PM ★★★★★

If opinion polls are anything to go by, Frank Darabont’s adaptation of a Stephen King novella is one of the greatest films of all time. Tim Robbins stars as Andy Dufresne, a man “wrongfully” sent to prison in Shawshank State for his wife’s murder. There he befriends fellow inmate Red (Morgan Freeman) and settles into life behind bars, while plotting possibly the most memorable prison break ever.
