AUSTIN HEALEY

South Africa v Lions, Durban, 1997

-

Iwas seriously hacked off not to be starting in the first Test in Cape Town, and I was even more annoyed when I did not manage to get off the bench, either. That was the game where scrum-half Matt Dawson threw a dummy that half of South Africa bought to score the winning try with 10 minutes to go, so I knew I had no chance of getting in the side for the second game.

That made me even more determined to play a part in Durban, and I was brought on about two minutes before Jerry Guscott kicked that serieswinning dropped goal.

I was on Jerry’s outside, and I would have had pretty much a clear run to the posts if he had passed it. So as he put that kick over the one thing he would have been able to hear was me shouting: “You greedy b------!” Mind you, the Red Sea could have parted and Jerry would not have passed me that ball.

It was special, though. There were loads of my Leicester team-mates in that side and we celebrated accordingly that night.
