Party’s over for ‘It girls’ who prefer vegan food and charity

Tatler’s A-list has shunned hedonism for horse-riding and healthy living

THE “It girls” of the Nineties were rarely seen without a glass of champagne in hand, and nightclubs were their natural habitat.

Today, their millennial equivalents are more likely to be performing charity work and perfecting their vegan recipes.

Tatler magazine, which re-invented the modern-day “It girl” in 1996 when it put Tara Palmer-tomkinson and Normandie Keith, the oil heiress, on the cover, has compiled a new list of “the most exciting, interesting and beautiful young woman in Britain”.

Some are blue-blooded, others are the progeny of rock musicians. But if they have one thing in common, it is a desire to live healthily.

They include Tess Ward, a food blogger and Cordon Bleu-trained chef who plans to open her own restaurant serving healthy food. Her ambition, she told the magazine, is “to create the perfect vegan burger”.

Two daughters of Peregrine Moncreiffe of that Ilk, feudal baron of Easter Moncreiffe in Perthshire, are featured in the list.

Alexandra, 20, is studying “nutrition and holistic healing”. Idina, 24, is “an artist and poet who writes mainly about nature, using it metaphorically to symbolise emotions and relationships”. Both have volunteered at Mother Teresa’s mission in Calcutta.

There is no mention of partying or red carpets among the names on the list – a far cry from the Nineties girls, who included Tamara Beckwith and Caprice Bourret.

Some enjoy traditional upper class pursuits. Bea Fresson, 21, is studying in Oxford and “on weekends you’ll find her on her horse, Major, with the Heythrop Hunt”. Lady Tatiana Mountbatten, 27, daughter of the Marquess of Milford Haven, is a professional dressage rider who speaks Danish, Swedish and German.

Meanwhile, Lady Kitty Spencer, 26, niece of the late Diana, Princess of Wales, and the daughter of Earl Spencer, lists her main hobby as playing board games.

After a small role playing a Hogwarts pupil in Harry Potter the Goblet of Fire, 27-year-old Greta Bellamacina could have pursued a career in Hollywood. Instead, she is a poet and film-maker whose first documentary was about the decline of public libraries in Britain.

In the absence of aristocratic lineage, having a famous relative can help to secure a place on the list. The daughters of Keith Richards, Sir Rod Stewart and Ewan Mcgregor are featured.

And while the It girls of old were firmly entrenched in SW postcodes, it is now fashionable for them to live on the grittier side of town.

Bee Beardsworth, 21, an “artist, writer, model, photographer, actor and astrologer”, lives in Dalston, east London. Her most recent film was “about a woman who meets men on Tinder and eats them”.

The exhibition ‘Tatler’s English Roses in association with Michael Kors’ is at the Saatchi Gallery from June 30 to July 2, and in the August issue of ‘Tatler’, on sale July 6.
