First fireproofing rule
SIR – With regard to fire safety, the Prime Minister’s resolve to have “no stone left unturned” is appropriate, as after the Great Fire of London external walls had to be stone or brick.
With a greater range of fire-resistant materials available today, it should be possible to have an even better policy than in the reign of Charles II. Geoffrey Hodgson

SIR – When my company moved offices in 1994 we ordered fire extinguishers. As a software company we had a lot of electrical equipment. In our previous offices we had colour-coded extinguishers (red, black, green) for different types of fire.
Our new extinguishers, however, were all red. I was told that new EU rules meant all extinguishers had to be red, with small pictograms on the side to distinguish between different types.
How many people, in the midst of a fire, smoke billowing around them, would find the right extinguisher? David Guest
