SIX STEPS TO HEALTHIER HAIR

-

Look after hair as you care for your complexion – which means washing daily. Never leave it unwashed for longer than three days.

Avoid raw bristle brushes. Use something with round plastic prongs, detangling from the ends, not the top. “If you are not sure if your brush is soft enough, try it on a jumper,” says Anabel. “If it frays wool, imagine what it is doing to your hair.”

Snack on apples, crudités, wholewheat crackers, or a bowl of porridge. “The energy available to your hair drops four hours after you eat, so crash or juice diets, and fasting, are terrible for it.”

Don’t cut out entire food groups. “There is no working around the fact that being vegan, for example, will affect the hair. Animal protein provides essential amino acids which cannot be made by the body, and is the only source of B12, unless you take a supplement.”

Manage stress. “Try yoga, swimming or Pilates. Mindfulness, meditation or cognitive behavioural therapy can also help hair retention.”

Get more sleep – a full eight hours if possible. “It’s good for your psychological health as well as your hair, and really important if you feel overwhelmed.”
