Vets warn dog owners ‘jerky’ meat treats can poison pets
Pet owners have been warned about the risks of dried meat treats after the first cases of dogs being poisoned by them were recorded in Britain.
Fanconi syndrome, a condition which causes kidney damage, had been reported previously in pets in North America and Australia.
The exact cause of the syndrome is unknown but it has been linked to the consumption of jerky treats.
The Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) has documented the condition for the first time in its annual report.
A total of 22 cases were reported by vets in 2016 in a variety of breeds, with symptoms ranging from vomiting to excessive thirst.
In two cases dogs were put down.
