The EU knows its negotiating position is weak

-

SIR – The EU insists it is in charge of sequencing Brexit negotiations. The fate of immigrants and the divorce settlement are to be agreed before anything on trade. Why? Because they know they are in a weak position. So they aim to extract maximum punishment before trade negotiations start. Then they will be flexible, knowing that bad trade terms for us will be worse for them. Yet World Trade Organization rules would be acceptable to us, as they are for trade with America and 100 other countries. Stuart Moore Bramham, West Yorkshire
