European judges end fight to save baby’s life
Terminally ill baby Charlie Gard will be allowed to die after his parents lost their final legal bid to take him to the USA for specialist treatment.
His father Chris Gard and mother Connie Yates had appealed to the European Court of Human Rights. But the judges said that undergoing experimental treatment would “continue to cause Charlie significant harm”. Ten-month-old Charlie suffers from a rare genetic condition and has brain damage. Great Ormond Street Hospital in London said there would be “no rush” to change Charlie’s care and said future plans would “involve careful planning and discussion”.
