Skirting conflict

SIR – Geoffrey Basil Spicer-simson, known to the natives of Tanganyika as Lord Belly-cloth, after the skirt he wore, is a very poor role model for boys however they choose to dress (Letters, June 26).

Having won one skirmish, more by luck than by judgment, he spent the rest of the war retreating from, or avoiding, the Germans. He finished the war as he had started, as an office clerk in the Admiralty. Jo Heydon
