Trolls told Tory MP to ‘burn’
INTIMIDATION faced by politicians could deter “good people” from seeking election, Theresa May has warned after a Tory MP revealed the appalling anti-semitic abuse she faced in the runup to June 8.
Sheryll Murray, MP for South East Cornwall and a member of the Conservative Friends of Israel group, said her campaign posters were defaced with swastikas, someone urinated on her office door and posts on social media called for her to be stabbed. Ms Murray told Mrs May during PMQS: “Over the past month I’ve had swastikas carved into posters, social media posts like ‘burn the witch’ and ‘stab the c---’ and someone urinated on my office door. Hardly kinder, gentler politics. Can you suggest what can be done to stop this intimidation, which may well be putting people off serving?”
Mrs May replied: “You are absolutely right to raise this issue and you were not the only person who experienced this sort of intimidation, particularly – I’m sorry to say – by female candidates. I believe this sort of behaviour has no place in our democracy.”
