How to avoid sun damage to children’s skin
SIR – If you want a rich and healthy tan for adults and children (report, June 28), the best method is to use a factor 50 UV sun tan lotion.
Lotions promoted for children are usually high factor and cheaper, as they are zero-rated for VAT. They tend not to need to be reapplied as often and are usually waterproof.
I have found that a tan acquired slowly, and with less damage, looks more even and lasts much longer than a fast frazzle approach. William Howells

SIR – Parents put their children at risk by not using sunscreen. Perhaps a contributory factor is that even some top-brand lotions permanently stain the clothing.

SIR – Brought up in a seaside town by busy hoteliers, my brother and I were sent off to the beach every fine day. I don’t remember being covered in sun lotion, or wearing a hat.
Last year I underwent two facial operations for skin cancer, and await a third.
