Stupid fine for Google
SIR – The European Commission’s fine on Google for exploiting its search monopoly is ridiculously misguided. Google has become the most popular search engine, in a dynamic and competitive market, because people continue to choose it.
It inherited nothing and achieved popularity through its own efforts. If consumers dislike Google’s promotion of services sufficiently they will switch to one of many other search engines.
With its antiquated approach, the Commission should leave this free market well alone. After Brexit, rather than fining it, we can attract Google to exploit our talented engineers through further UK investment. Chris Harrison
