Robson fans cry foul over Hawk Eye line call mistake

- By Rozina Sabur and Patrick Sawer

BRITISH wildcard Laura Robson has crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round after a reportedly incorrect Hawk Eye decision.

The electronic line-calling system is renowned for its accuracy, yet spectators claim it failed to make a correct decision during Robson’s 6-4, 6-2 first-round defeat to Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil.

Haddad Maia hit a long groundstroke from the back of the court, which was initially called out. However, the chair umpire felt the ball had clipped the line, and overruled the decision.

Robson appealed the decision, meaning the call was reviewed by the Hawk Eye technology. But spectators claimed the replay footage showed a shot from another moment during the rally, costing the 23-year-old a point.

The former Wimbledon junior champion looked bemused by the decision, as did her fans on Court 18, who jeered the decision and took to social media to criticise the technology.

It is the third year in a row Robson has been knocked out of the tournament in the first round.
