Steady decline in hen harriers

-

HEN HARRIERS are steadily declining in the UK, according to the latest population survey.

The research suggests there are now just 545 territorial pairs remaining – a drop of 88 (13 per cent) since the last national survey in 2010. Longer-term figures show a dramatic decline of 204 pairs (39 per cent) in the last 12 years.

Scotland remains the stronghold for the birds, with 460 pairs residing there. Known for their skydancing ritual, the bird was driven to extinction in mainland Britain in the 19th century before making a return.

Previous research suggests the main factor limiting the UK population is illegal killing associated with driven grouse moor management in northern England and parts of Scotland. Other pressures include cold and wet weather conditions over a number of breeding seasons, changes in habitat management and a lack of prey. Samantha Herbert
