The British Museum is developing technology to ease congestion in the more popular galleries in the hope it can lure visitors towards lesser-known attractions.
Staff want to guide tourists from crowd-pleasers such as the Rosetta Stone, Elgin marbles and mummies, and point them to other items they believe will be of equal interest.
Dr Hartwig Fischer, the museum director, said he hoped to use digital “suggestions” to bring about a “better distribution” of guests. He said: “When you look into the future, digital will play a much bigger role when it comes to making people engage with the collections.”
He said he would like to see visitors pass by an exhibit and have information about it delivered to their phones, along with suggestions for other things they might like to see. The museum could gather data on visitor behaviours and tailor the information to guide them to other artefacts of interest.
