Teenagers get lost in mine as danger signs are damaged

-

 A group of teenagers became lost in an abandoned mine after vandals defaced directional arrows.

They were exploring Box Mine, near Corsham, Wilts, when they stumbled into an underground area known as “the cathedral”.

More than 125ft down, it is the only part of the mine complex with a mobile signal as it stretches all the way to the surface.

The youths called 999 as soon as they realised their phones worked and were rescued by a fire crew from nearby Trowbridge.

The mine, which dates back to Roman times but was closed for good in 1968, was previously used by the Ministry of Defence for storing ammunition and dynamite during both world wars.
