Old country-folk
SIR – Housing problems in many rural areas are at a critical level.
For younger households, the opportunities for obtaining a decent, affordable home are limited, and shortages are compounded by competition from commuters, second-home owners and retirees.
However, older people may suffer extra disadvantages if they need support. Transport costs limit access to social care. Council funds are short. There are few home improvement agencies in rural areas to help meet “care and repair” needs. The problem is exacerbated by inadequate transport – and, indeed, broadband – and the closure of post offices, shops and pubs.
Today, we are launching an inquiry into ways to improve housing and care in rural areas. Peers and MPS are joining with housing providers and rural organisations to seek solutions for older people in the countryside. We’d be delighted to hear from anyone with views on this urgent issue.
