Politicising tragedy
SIR – The objections to the appointment of Sir Martin Moore-bick to the Grenfell inquiry on the grounds that, to quote the Labour MP Emma Dent Coad, locals want “somebody with a human face” (report, July 5) is a prefect example of emotions overturning rationality.
What is required is a forensic analysis and examination of the causes of the tragedy at Grenfell, many of which probably go back two or three decades and involve decisions made by people from across the political spectrum.
What the majority of those currently making the most noise on the subject want, however, is for the Conservative Party and its local councillors to shoulder the whole blame. Grenfell has become a rallying point for the Left, with the truth becoming subservient to the politics. Michael R Gordon
