Guantanamo Bay inmate accused of fomenting anger over Grenfell fire

-

 A former Guantánamo Bay detainee has been accused of exploiting the Grenfell Tower tragedy to stir up anger among young Muslims.

In a 12-minute video, which has been viewed more than a quarter of a million times on Facebook and Youtube, Moazzam Begg appears to equate the deaths in Grenfell Tower to Muslim fatalities in Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq caused by British and US intervention.

He says that the British authorities allowed the tower to burn and this will be a factor in radicalising Muslims.

Last night a senior Muslim Labour MP accused Mr Begg of exploiting the circumstances of the fire to “stoke up anger” among young Muslims.

Khalid Mahmood, the Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Barr, said: “He is comparing events in Syria and Iraq to what happened in Grenfell Tower. He is using the Grenfell Tower tragedy to stoke up anger among Muslims.”

Mr Begg, who lives in Birmingham, spent three years in Guantánamo Bay accused by the US of being an “enemy combatant”. He always claimed his detention was unlawful.

He was released in 2005 and received £1m in compensation from the British Government for his detention.
