Puny drone regulations leave skies less safe
sir – As the flying display director at Cowes Week with the Red Arrows, I am responsible for the safety of both aircraft and public.
There is one major threat over which I have no control: drones (Letters, July 6). They are not fully regulated in Britain, despite their potential danger.
This matter has been raised a number of times in the past year or so with the authorities – with no discernible effect. Following the Shoreham disaster in 2015, we are all trying hard to make air shows safer, and lessons learnt from that tragedy are being enacted.
The Government must play its part, though, and require drones to be fully regulated – with severe penalties for those potentially endangering life – before an entirely predictable accident takes place, whether at an airport or an air show. Commander Tony Higham (retd) Hambledon, Hampshire
