Fair austerity

- Victoria Baillon Alan Edwards

SIR –G R Rubin (Letters, July 6) tells his children and grandchildren that austerity is a policy whereby the rich get richer and the poor poorer.

I tell mine that austerity is living within our means. Unless we do, their generation will pay for it.

SIR – As a member of the Conservative Party, I am very concerned by members of the Cabinet who are expressing their own opinions to the media – probably in the hope that it will help them become the next leader.

These people and their opinions are not helpful to the electorate, which wants a government that can deal with the problems we face today. They must act as one, and not allow themselves to appear a shambles. If they cannot do so, I will seriously have to consider whether to vote for them next time.
