Konta marches on at Wimbledon

-

u Johanna Konta’s opponent Caroline Garcia has denied that her father broke rules after he was seen apparently signalling to her during their match yesterday.

Television coverage repeatedly focused in on Ms Garcia’s father, Louis-paul Garcia, who is also her coach, appearing to show him giving the Spaniard advice through hand signals.

While it is permitted on the women’s tour, coaching on court is banned at Wimbledon and other grand slams. Ms Garcia lost 6-7, 6-4, 4-6, making Konta the first British woman to proceed to the quarter finals since Jo Durie in 1984.

Ms Garcia said: “You think I’m looking at my dad for 20 seconds trying to understand what he is telling me?” Wimbledon said the referee’s office had been made aware of the claims. Mr Garcia denied breaking rules.
