sir – Allan Bocci (Letters, July 8) advocates artificial noise generators in “impossible to hear” electric cars.

At the speed deemed safe on our high streets, all tyred vehicles broadcast their presence by the ripple of rubber on tarmacadam. It is the dominant acoustic sign of presence for the modern internalco­mbustion powered vehicle, well above the exhaust and engine noise. David Blackwell
