Trust provides a wildlife corridor
The Woodland Trust has linked two important habitats in a Surrey woods with a wildlife corridor to protect rare species.
Fencing and scrub clearing will allow rare breed sheep and goats that graze on grassland to roam free, encouraging the spread of seeds and pollen.
Only one of the areas linked is currently grazed, which is essential for maintaining a variety of species. If sites are left ungrazed, the habitat changes to scrub, which stops light reaching important plants.
The work on Marden Park, a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) within the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, was carried out with a £15,000 grant from Viridor Credits Environmental Company.
The area is home to 25 species of butterfly, along with grasses and rare flora, including orchids.
