Paralympian killed as discus cage collapses in training
A Paralympian has died after a discus cage collapsed on him during a training accident in East London.
Abdullah Hayayei, 36, represented the United Arab Emirates at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year.
The father-of-five was killed at Newham Leisure Centre on Tuesday as he trained for the World Para Athletics Championships, which begin tomorrow in London.
The Health and Safety Executive yesterday said it was investigating the incident.
Mr Hayayei was due to compete in the javelin, discus and shot put at the championships.
Majid Al Usaimi, vice president of Mr Hayayei’s sports federation, said he was “overcome by grief ” on hearing the news.
Ed Warner, co-chairman of the London World Championships, said: “Everyone within the London 2017 organising committee is shocked and saddened.”
