Paralympia­n killed as discus cage collapses in training

 A Paralympia­n has died after a discus cage collapsed on him during a training accident in East London.

Abdullah Hayayei, 36, represente­d the United Arab Emirates at the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro last year.

The father-of-five was killed at Newham Leisure Centre on Tuesday as he trained for the World Para Athletics Championsh­ips, which begin tomorrow in London.

The Health and Safety Executive yesterday said it was investigat­ing the incident.

Mr Hayayei was due to compete in the javelin, discus and shot put at the championsh­ips.

Majid Al Usaimi, vice president of Mr Hayayei’s sports federation, said he was “overcome by grief ” on hearing the news.

Ed Warner, co-chairman of the London World Championsh­ips, said: “Everyone within the London 2017 organising committee is shocked and saddened.”
