A Zebra’s Tale (2013) 5STAR, 11.25AM ★★

 Born with only half his body covered in stripes, zebra Khumba (voiced by Jake T Austin) is ostracised by his herd, so sets out to find a magic watering hole that might restore his stripes, but instead finds himself. The wildebeest and meerkats are chuckle– worthy and the animation looks pretty given its low budget, but the story, while it will keep the tots engaged, is breezy and undemanding. Liam Neeson and Steve Buscemi co-star.

Down to the Sea in Ships (1949, b/w) FILM4, 4.00PM ★★★

 Lionel Barrymore plays Captain Bering Joy in Henry Hathaway’s man-and-boy maritime adventure set aboard a whaling ship. Joy, though still on crutches from an injury, is unwilling to retire, at least until his grandson (Dean Stockwell) is brought up in the ways of the sea and can continue the family tradition. Capping it off is an impressive sequence involving an iceberg in the fog. Richard Widmark also stars.

Wolf Creek (2005) TCM, 11.00PM ★★★

 Three backpackers in Australia are having the time of their lives, until their car breaks down in the Outback and they’re rescued by a slightly creepy man who turns out (surprise, surprise) to be a serial killer. Genuinely scary horrors are rare, but this ferocious low-budget chiller from Greg Mclean is the real deal – made worse by being based on real-life events. Beware, it is distressingly brutal.
