Fighting on the beaches? We came to watch Wonder Woman

CINEMAGOERS were left baffled after paying to watch the Wonder Woman film, only to find themselves watching seven minutes of Dunkirk instead.

An extended showcase of the Second World War film caused mass confusion in cinemas after ticketholders feared they had walked into the wrong film.

The trailer of Dunkirk, directed by Christopher Nolan, had been deliberately shown in US IMAX theatres as an extended preview ahead of other films.

The war epic, which stars Sir Mark Rylance, Sir Kenneth Branagh and pop star Harry Styles, premiered in London last night with Prince Harry and Dunkirk veterans as its guests.

The Prince had earlier hosted a reception for 12 veterans at Kensington Palace. He told them: “You were heroes and you still are.”

Meeting the group, aged from 96 to 100, he asked them whether they were nervous to see how the film reflected their experiences.

“I hope it gets the story as accurately as possible and gives everybody only the smallest experience of what it was like for you out there,” he said.

Colin Ashford, who served with 42nd Battalion, Highland Light Infantry, told the Prince he would not watch the film because it would be too emotional. Harry Garrett, 99, said it was “ideal for civilians” but could not possibly capture the real “hell” of war.

In a surprise for veterans, the Duchess of Cambridge and her children Prince George and Princess Charlotte made a low-key appearance at the entrance of Kensington Palace.

Prince Harry attended the premiere with George Wagner, 97, who in early 1940 went to France with the Royal Engineers, Louis Nethercott, who served in Afghanistan with the Royal Marines, and Gemma Morgan, a Captain in the Army who was deployed to Kosovo.
