Tony Blair has brought the wrong message from his EU masters

-

SIR – Tony Blair is probably being used as a messenger by the EU, which has a history of rejecting any democratic vote that doesn’t align with the Brussels master plan.

In his attempts to reform the Common Agriculture Policy, Mr Blair negotiated away half of Margaret Thatcher’s fully justified UK taxpayer rebate. He did this in exchange for the promise of CAP reform that, needless to say, never happened.

In their choice of messenger, President Emmanuel Macron, still honeymooning, and wily Chancellor Angela Merkel are clutching at straws. In focusing on migration, they miss the real point: UK sovereignty.

As the real costs to EU taxpayers of the cessation of our contributions get ever nearer, David Davis should feel very encouraged. Peter Sander

SIR – Tony Blair has the distinction of being the most unifying voice in British politics. Whatever your views, you can feel reassured that if Mr Blair is advocating one course of action, the rest of us can be safely confident in taking a completely opposite position. Brian Storey

SIR – Yesterday, I found myself in the uncomfortable position of agreeing with Tony Blair’s proposition about a compromise on Brexit.

Which is the biggest delusion – that we can subvert the decision of the people in the referendum, or that we can conquer the world by leaving the customs union?

Mr Blair is correct: leaving the customs union, combined with a free-spending Labour government, would be the worst of all nightmares.

Mr Blair’s legacy will always be smeared with the blood of those who died in Iraq, but, with no leader among the current cohort of politicians, he still sounds convincing and passionate. (Yes, I’m holding my nose.) David Milner

SIR – “Tony Blair discussed quitting as prime minister for a job in the European Union three years before he finally stood down, newly published diaries from his former press aide Alastair Campbell reveal,” (report, June 29, 2016). Alan Oxer

SIR – Sir John Chilcot recently said that Mr Blair was “not straight with the nation” over the Iraq war. To me, it seems nothing has changed. Ray Lines

SIR – Mr Blair needs to butt out of the Brexit negotiation. He’s ruined this country financially once, and we do not need him to try again. Chris Allan
