Rail strikes mean unhappiness for passengers

-

SIR – We had arranged a longdesired family trip on the Settle to Carlisle line. On July 8, my son received an email confirming our trip for the following day.

From various parts of Lancashire and Yorkshire, nine of us assembled at Keighley station, only to be told that striking staff (Leading article, July 9) meant there were no trains that day to Appleby, where we had booked lunch at a restaurant.

What a disappointment this was, after weeks of excited anticipation by all.

We are continually told that these strikes are not about money. No one believes this.

SIR – In the days of steam, most boys’ ambition was to be an engine driver. Now with the prospect of £75,000 a year, Southern drivers want even more. What an opportunity for graduates to provide a vital service and to repay their student loans sooner than by a top starter job in the professions. Edward Wilkinson
