Jolly good, Roger

-

Few people doubt that Roger Federer is the greatest men’s grass court tennis player of the modern era, perhaps of all time. But he left no room for further questions yesterday when he became the first man to win eight Wimbledon singles titles, a full five years after last winning the title and 14 since his first success at SW19.

It was the 11th time the Swiss maestro had graced Centre Court in the final and he progressed through the fortnight almost effortlessly, without dropping a set and hardly breaking into a sweat. It was disappointing that Andy Murray failed to get to the final this year, hindered as he was by injury. But with no home interest to cheer, the charming and stylish Federer was the champion Wimbledon wanted to see.
