100-year-old skulls found in carrier bags
♦ The discovery of two 100-year-old skulls in carrier bags dumped within a mile of each other has baffled police.
Builders raised the alarm on Monday after stumbling across the first skull while working at the empty Budgens shop in Totnes in Devon.
Officers then found a second skull in another bag near the River Dart less than a mile away. Expert examination revealed their age and that they belonged to a man and a woman. The discoveries are not being treated as a criminal investigation.
“To be honest, it’s a bit of a mystery,” said a police source, although detectives believe the skulls may have been removed from one of number of churchyards in the town that contain very old graves as part of a prank.
