President of Supreme Court to be a woman

-

The next president of the Supreme Court, Britain’s most senior judge, is expected to be a woman for the first time.

Baroness Hale of Richmond, an expert in family law, is expected to be named by Downing Street today.

Lady Hale, a teacher’s daughter from Yorkshire, has previously criticised the judiciary for its lack of diversity. At the age of 72, Lady Hale, who studied Law at the University of Cambridge, is among the last of the judges who can serve to 75.

Three other Supreme Court posts are to be announced, one of them a woman, taking the female tally among the 12 Supreme Court justices to two.
