Heat (1995) DAVE, 9.00PM★★★★★

 Bringing together the irresistible pairing of Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, Heat is a tautly plotted, superbly acted thriller from Michael Mann. Its premise is simple: a dedicated LAPD cop (Pacino) is on the trail for a professional bank robber (De Niro, his last great role), who lives by the callous motto of, “Never have anything in your life that you can’t walk out on in 30 seconds flat.” Natalie Portman also stars.

Salt (2010) E4, 9.00PM ★★★

 Directed by Phillip Noyce, this thriller is so full of twists that you’re never quite sure what to believe. Angelina Jolie is CIA operative Evelyn Salt, who’s named as a double agent by a captured Russian spy. What ensues is a cat-and-mouse chase in which Jolie is able to survive ridiculous daredevil escapes. It’s entertaining enough, even if the plot is far-fetched. Liev Schreiber, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Daniel Olbrychski co-star.

Election (1999) W, 9.00PM ★★★

 Adapted from Tom Perrotta’s novel, this sharp, satirical high-school comedy stars Matthew Broderick and Reese Witherspoon. When irksome overachiever Tracy Flick (Witherspoon) runs for school president, teacher Jim Mcallister (Broderick, looking a world away from the super-cool Ferris Bueller) becomes fixated on bringing her down, and convinces a nice-but-dim jock (Chris Klein) to run against her.
