Ghostbusters star’s threat to sue Isle of Wight hot sauce firm
DAN AYKROYD, the actor, has threatened to sue an Isle of Wight hot sauce company, after a business pitch by the family firm to the actor went wrong.
Mr Aykroyd, who starred in Ghostbusters, has demanded Bloody Hell Hot Sauce makers Bobby and Rosie Powers stop selling their chilli sauce in a skullshaped bottle, claiming the design is too similar to his £350 a bottle vodka.
The legal row was sparked after Mr Powers approached Crystal Head Vodka to suggest a skull-themed Bloody Mary collaboration. The couple were shocked to receive a letter from the star’s solicitors, accusing them of trademark infringement and insisting they destroy all their stock.
“When I read the letter, I was physically sick. It’s so unfair. So many products are sold in skull bottles, and ours has nothing to do with their market,” said Mr Powers, who has just bought 10,000 skull-shaped bottles, enough to last for more than two years.
Mr Powers’ solicitor, Michael Coyle, said: “It truly is a battle of David and Goliath proportions… but I’m confident we can defend Bobby’s design and his small family business, based on the lack of confusion in the marketplace.”
