Don’t forget to toast the Welsh wine industry

-

sir – Although it is great to read about the success of domestic vineyards and wine production, it is frustrating to see continued references to “the English wine industry” (report, July 10).

There is a growing industry in Wales in particular, including production of wines that have won international awards. There has been a reluctance from within the sector to promote British wines, for fear that people would inadvertently buy “British-made wine”, which is produced in the UK from imported grape juice concentrate – very much an inferior product.

If consumers are careful to choose some of the fantastic wines now being produced in the UK from grapes grown in England or Wales (and no doubt in Scotland and Northern Ireland as well in future), then they will have a very pleasurable drinking experience. Andy Mounsey
