Security after Isil

-

SIR – With the imminent physical defeat of Isil in Iraq and Syria, Britain and other permanent members of the United Nations Security Council – the US, Russia, China and France – must ensure that massive aid investment and reconstruction begin in these places as soon as possible, otherwise we are in danger of repeating the mistakes of Iraq in 2003.

If we fail to do this, not only will we end up needing another Chilcot report, but we will strengthen the ideology of Isil and have to confront the jihadists on our streets more often than we currently do, and for the foreseeable future.

Currently, the greatest disappointments for those supporting aid organisations in Syria are the lack of action by our politicians on this matter, and the lack of coverage, compared to Brexit, that the situation receives in the mainstream media. Hamish de Bretton-gordon
