THE police watchdog has launched an investigation after a man died following a pursuit in east London.

Scotland Yard said the 20-year-old man, named locally as Rashan Charles, took ill after he was seen to “swallow an object” after being chased into a shop by police.

CCTV footage shared on social media appeared to show the man being restrained by at least one officer in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was taken to hospital after becoming unwell, where he was pronounced dead. Chief Supt Simon Laurence, borough commander for Hackney, said the matter was now being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

He added that the incident began when police pursued a man who was travelling in a car in Hackney.

The IPCC said it had launched an investigation at 3.10am on Saturday, less than 90 minutes after the chase.
