Taoists create a stink over incense stick curbs
Thousands marched in a colourful Taoist procession in Taipei yesterday, protesting against a government call to cut back on burning incense sticks.
About 100 temples took part in the demonstration, where performers carried statues of Taoist gods on their shoulders while others danced in larger-than-life costumes.
Taiwan wants to curb the practice of burning the sticks and lighting firecrackers to combat pollution, but opponents say the rituals are a crucial part of their religious traditions.
