Anail-biting match goes down to the last few deliveries in front of packed stands at Lord’s, the home of cricket. Fortunes twist first one way, then that, as two sides vie for the Cricket World Cup. And in the end it is the England team which triumphs, pipping India’s agonised players. Meanwhile, in the European Football Championships, England are among the favourites to claim the title. Ah. There, perhaps, is the giveaway. For this, of course, is women’s sport – where increasingly spectators are tuning in to find skill and spectacle every bit the equal of the men’s game. Tennis fans have long known this to be true. Congratulations to the England cricket team for showing that it applies on the square too. Let England’s women footballers please show that there are limits, however, by not losing on penalties.
