SIR – The Conservative Party should resist a leadership change (Letters, July 22) and ignore any media pressure.
In Germany earlier this year, Sigmar Gabriel stood down as the leader of the Social Democratic Party in favour of Martin Schulz because the media had hyped Schulz as the better candidate to defeat Angela Merkel, attesting to his huge lead in polls conducted by the mass circulation newspaper Bild.
Martin Schulz and his party are now 14 points behind Mrs Merkel. Morag Black

SIR – My late friend Brigadier Peter Young, a much-decorated Second World War Commando leader, was once challenged by a visiting general to write an essay on leadership.
Young’s essay was to the point. He wrote: “There is no mystery about leadership. They can’t follow you if you are skulking about behind them.”
The Prime Minister should take note. Bob Burgess
