SIR – Celia Walden’s article on sexist advertising (July 19) was illustrated by a vintage ad for a Hoover, shown bedecked with Christmas ribbon.

Sixty years ago my father must have been influenced by this advertisement, as he gave my mother that very model for Christmas.
