Diana, Our Mother: Her Life and Her Legacy
ITV, 9.00PM
The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry have chosen the 20th anniversary of the death of their mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, to open up about her for the first time in depth – and it is very powerful viewing. In this 90-minute film from Oxford Film and Television, who are old hands at royal filmmaking, having already produced Our Queen and Our Queen at 90, the princes leaf through photos from the family album (it’s also fascinating watching that fraternal dynamic up close).
They talk about cherished memories from their childhoods and their last contact with their mother before her death, as well as how they have coped since the loss of a woman who, says William, “really enjoyed the laughter and the fun… but understood that there was a real life outside of Palace walls”. “She was one of the naughtiest parents,” Harry recalls. “She smothered us with love.” Joining them in paying tribute to Diana’s personal and professional achievements are a few inevitable contributors (Elton John, her brother Earl Spencer) and the odd wild card (Rihanna). The BBC’S Windsor-authorised documentary on the days surrounding the princess’s death will be shown later this year. Gabriel Tate
