Froome rounds off Tour with a ring

- By Rozina Sabur

WHEN Chris Froome won his fourth Tour de France title on Sunday he was no doubt looking forward to a brief respite.

But there was one final mission the cyclist and the rest of Team Sky went to painstaking lengths to pull off – helping a cycling fan propose. Tom Calverley, a Channel 4 News producer, had been waiting for the right moment to propose to his girlfriend, Amy Drewery, a manager at the Prospect union, since he bought a ring last year.

It was while watching the Tour de France that an idea for the perfect proposal occurred to him. “I fired off an email to Sir Dave Brailsford [Team Sky’s principal] while the Tour was going on and he got back to me in five minutes and said ‘we’ll make it happen’.” In a video of the proposal, Mr Calverley introduces Froome to Miss Dewery, before the cyclist passes the ring box over to him, saying: “I’ve been carrying this around for three weeks with me.” The couple, both 31, have promised Froome an invitation when they marry.

“He was just a lovely fellow,” said Mr Calverley. “Team Sky played a blinder.”
