Taxing tempo
SIR – I write this while waiting on HM Revenue and Customs’ inquiry line. Why is fast and staccato music played to waiting taxpayers?
Would it not be better to use soothing rhythms and smooth sounds to settle callers before they engage with HMRC’S call-centre staff?
Perhaps the Chancellor might have a word with the Culture Secretary.
