Diana’s memory
SIR – I am outraged that tapes of Diana, Princess of Wales, are to be broadcast on Channel 4 (report, July 26). This action is predicated on her sons’ loving and moving tribute to her on ITV last Sunday in some way legitimising the release of privately recorded tapes by the unprincipled Peter Settelen.
Diana was human like the rest of us. Her memory can only be sullied by tapes regarded in the Burrell trial as “so sensitive that the prosecution agreed not to use them”. Their screening in America caused such a backlash that they have never been seen in Britain.
If Channel 4 has an ounce of decency, it will burn them now – so that William and Harry can relax in the knowledge that their loving memories remain uncompromised. Peter Bowker
