Fining councils
SIR – If Kensington and Chelsea Council were found guilty of corporate manslaughter and fined millions (report, July 28), who would benefit? Not the good folk of Kensington and Chelsea, who would be deprived of millions from their available funds.
Crimes are committed by people, not abstract bodies. Whatever happened to joint and several liability? John Drewry

SIR – From your report on the meeting between the Grenfell Tower Inquiry head and survivors (July 27), it seems that Sir Martin Moore-bick is being rejected by some residents who say: “You don’t represent us.”
Surely it would be improper for Sir Martin to represent any group or faction concerned with the inquiry. Objections seem to be based on a simple misunderstanding of the idea of impartiality as it applies to justice. R J Walpole

SIR – As a resident of Kensington and Chelsea, I wonder whether it is not time that the council removed the remains of the dreadful fire at Grenfell Tower, at least by covering them, so that local residents do not have to be reminded that they are living next to an unkempt graveyard. Timothy Royle
