 Tonight’s Prom adds to this year’s ongoing celebrations of the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, as the French Baroque ensemble Pygmalion perform his great choral masterpiece on an enormous scale, his Vespers of 1610. Raphaël Pichon conducts a work that is generally considered the most audacious and ambitious piece of religious music composed before Bach, and was so acclaimed in its time that Monteverdi was given the prestigious post of maestro di cappella at St Mark’s in Venice until his death in 1643.
