The BBC’S summer season celebrating the work of the novelist Henry James through a series of dramas and documentaries continues in the Woman’s
Hour serial slot every morning this week, with a five-part adaptation of James’s novella Daisy Miller. The story bears all the James hallmarks, featuring an American girl in Italy and a complex exploration of US and European social mores, and the production stars Julianna Jennings as Daisy, Jack Lowden as Frederick Winterbourne and Cesare Taurasi as Mr Giovanelli.

Tonight’s Prom adds to this year’s ongoing celebrations of the 450th anniversary of Monteverdi’s birth, as the French Baroque ensemble Pygmalion perform his great choral masterpiece on an enormous scale, his Vespers of 1610. Raphaël Pichon conducts a work that is generally considered the most audacious and ambitious piece of religious music composed before Bach, and was so acclaimed in its time that Monteverdi was given the prestigious post of maestro di cappella at St Mark’s in Venice until his death in 1643.
