Jail term extended for ‘brutal’ breast surgeon

-

A surgeon who carried out needless breast operations has had his 15-year jail term increased to 20 for “brutal and sustained” wounding of patients.

Ian Paterson, 59, from Altrincham, Greater Manchester, who left 10 victims scarred and disfigured, was told to serve more time by the Court of Appeal yesterday after it found the original sentence was “unduly lenient” for multiple offences.

Robert Buckland, the solicitor general, who asked for the sentence review, said afterwards: “This is a truly sickening crime and my thoughts are with the victims and their families. I hope the increased sentence will help bring some closure for them.”
