Day 3 SUNDAY AUG 6

Brits to watch

Day two of the heptathlon sees Katarina Johnson-Thompson tackle her troublesome javelin in her bid to win a first global medal. She will need to improve on past performances if she is to make the podium. Multiple British champion Holly Bradshaw is not far off the world’s best in the pole vault and will expect to mix it with the medal contenders in the final. Asha Philip and Desiree Henry are two of Britain’s fastest ever 100m

sprinters, although making it through to the final would be deemed a success. Andrew Pozzi will expect to advance from the 110m hurdles semi-finals.

Foreign star

Nafissatou Thiam (below). Recent performances suggest the Belgian heptathlete will become one of the standout names in athletics for some time. Thiam caused a huge upset to win Olympic gold last summer, before becoming only the fourth athlete to break the 7,000-point mark earlier this year. She looks nailed on to win a first world title.

Don’t-miss event

Women’s 100m. Having opted to contest the 100m alone and not double up in the 200m, Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson is the standout name in the short sprint. She has twice run below 10.80sec this season. The race for the other medals looks wide open with Dafne Schippers, Murielle Ahoure, Michelle-lee Ahye and Tori Bowie in the hunt for minor honours.
