Day 7 THURSDAY AUG 10
Brits to watch
Eilidh Doyle was given the honour of leading the British team after her fellow athletes voted to make her captain and she would love to repay their faith with a medal in the 400m hurdles final. It would be a surprise if the former European champion managed it, though, with all of her global medals coming as part of Britain’s 4x400m relay team. National 200m champion Nethaneel Mitchell-blake sits second on the British all-time list, but will likely need a personal best to trouble the podium. Dina Ashersmith will hope to go well in the 200m semi-finals, while Laura Muir returns for the 5,000m heats.
Foreign star
Christian Taylor (below). With two Olympic and two world titles under his belt, there can be no doubt that Taylor is the leading triple jumper of his generation. He came within 8cm of Jonathan Edwards’ world record when winning gold at the World Championships two years ago and produced the third biggest jump of all time earlier this summer.
Don’t-miss event
Men’s 200m. Usain Bolt’s decision not to contest the 200m makes this only more intriguing. South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk and Isaac Makwala, of Botswana, look likely to resume their gold medal battle days after locking horns over 400m, while any number could secure the final spot on the podium.
